Doula Care & Insurance Reimbursement

Helping Houston Families Maximize Their Benefits

At Great Expectations Houston, we want to make professional doula support as accessible as possible. While our agency does not "direct-bill" insurance providers, many Houston families successfully receive partial or full reimbursement through health accounts and private insurance carriers.

Houston Doula Care & Insurance Reimbursement

1. HSA & FSA (Health Savings & Flexible Spending Accounts)

This is the most common way our Houston clients pay for their care. Since doula services are generally considered an eligible medical expense under IRS guidelines, you can use your pre-tax dollars for our birth and postpartum packages.

  • How it works: You can pay your deposit and balances directly using your HSA/FSA debit card. It is just that easy!

2. Private Insurance Reimbursement

With the expansion of maternity benefits, many major Texas carriers (such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Memorial Hermann Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare) have expanded their doula reimbursement policies.

  • The Superbill: Following your birth or the completion of your postpartum care, we provide an official Superbill. This contains the necessary CPT codes (such as 99499) and Tax ID info required to process an out-of-network claim.

  • Gap Exceptions: If your plan covers doula care but lacks "in-network" providers in the Houston area, you can often file for a Gap Exception to have our services covered at your plan's in-network rate.

3. Corporate & Third-Party Benefits (Carrot, Maven, etc.)

Houston is home to many major employers (including those in the Energy Corridor and the Texas Medical Center) that offer "Family-Forming" stipends through platforms like Carrot, Maven, or Progyny.

  • We are highly experienced in providing the specific invoices and verification paperwork required by these corporate platforms so you can easily access your employer-sponsored doula stipend.

Payment Protocol: Great Expectations Houston is an out-of-network provider. All fees are paid to the agency according to your contract schedule. We then provide the documentation needed for you to seek reimbursement directly from your carrier. At this time we do not participate in TRICARE or Medicaid programs.

How to Verify Your Houston Benefits

Houston Doula Care & Insurance Reimbursement

We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking:

  1. "Does my plan cover out-of-network reimbursement for CPT code 99499 (Doula/Labor Support)?"

  2. "Do I need to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity from my OB/GYN or Midwife to qualify for reimbursement?"

  3. "What is the specific process for submitting a maternity-related out-of-network claim?"
